This young singer songwriter will be playing a selection of her own songs and talking about them at one of the Storytellers events at TeeTotal.

The Deadstring Brothers – The Chattery Restaurant
MUSIC
9pm
Tickets: £8 from the Chattery (01792 473276) or on the door
Not unlike Exile-era Stones, Deadstring Brothers deliver a menacing sound that draws equally on the melancholy of country ballads and the abandon of rock and blues. The bands music is deeply rooted in the storytelling and instrumental traditions of Hank Williams, Johnny Cash, and the Outlaw Movement, but is also informed by the song structure and understated aggression commonly associated with Detroit bands.
Paul Hughes – The White Room, Grand Theatre Arts Wing
ART
7.30pm
FREE ENTRY
Paul was born in Aberystwyth, but has spent most of his life living and working in Swansea. He is currently a lecturer at Gorseinon College.
Paul’s work deals with the tension between the physical and the spiritual. His paintings are inspired by the South Wales landscape, particularly in and around the Gower peninsular. He uses shapes, structures and colours to provide a starting point for his semi-abstract paintings. He doesn’t want his work to be just paint on canvas, but to become objects in their own right.
The exhibition runs until Sunday 8th October
Boys From the Hill – The Brunswick Pub

9pm
FREE ENTRY
Boys From The Hill are a product of the maritime, industrial, historical and political song culture of South Wales and particularly Swansea.

They have huge hearts and unwavering commitment.

His poetry will be featured in forthcoming issues of The Seventh Quarry.
Gemma Ray Ritual – Singleton Hotel
MUSIC
9pm
FREE ENTRY
The bands music has been described as ‘voluptuously soulful blues that rock’, and as ‘original progressive blues’ but neither does their original sound justice, which is characterised not in the least by a raw emotion and intensity in the live environment. Drawing on influences from Bjork to Pink Floyd, Sam Brown to The Mars Volta, she has been described as ‘a grittier Loretta Lynn … from the wrong side of the tracks’ and ‘uncouthly ace’ by NME. Highly recommended.
“Gemma Ray obviously gets her kicks by taking in strays from late-90s also-rans like Ten Benson and January but when she leads her ritual down the same dark paths as The Duke Spirit, PJ Harvey and Nick Cave, they’re a brilliantly brooding prospect. 8/10.” Rick Martin, NME
The Singleton Hotel, 1-2 Dillwyn St, Swansea, SA1 4AE - 01792 4721
Saturday, 7th October 2006

David McAlmont Set One: You Go to My Head – Taliesin Arts Centre
MUSIC
7.30pm
Tickets: £12, £10 concessions from Taliesin box office (01792 602060)
You take a classic song and a great voice - and, as David McAlmont says, when you put the two together you can't really go wrong.
McAlmont has long had the voice. From his hits with Bernard Butler through his acclaimed solo releases to his collaborations with the likes of David Arnold and Craig Armstrong, his unique voice with its multi-octave range has adorned and enriched British music for a decade and more.
In the old cliché David McAlmont could sing the phone book and make it sound good. But a great singer deserves great songs - hence Set One: You Go To My Head, a glorious collection of classics and standards that provides a timeless vehicle for his thrilling voice.
They include songs by Cole Porter, Johnny Mercer and Harold Arlen made famous by the likes of Ella Fitzgerald, Nat King Cole and Frank Sinatra, such as You Go To My Head, Under My Skin, Night and Day and One For My Baby.
“It’s a mystery that McAlmont isn’t a megastar” The Independent on Sunday
